The Hidden Hard Side of Homeschooling

The seemingly simple things are sometimes the most challenging. Any of this sound familiar?

  • Some days I just don’t feel like homeschooling.
  • I am struggling to keep my three-year-old occupied while I homeschool my older children.
  • I’m behind on everything.
  • I don’t know how to focus on God.
  • I can’t figure out if my child has a learning challenge or is just being stubborn.
  • I’m worried I will fail my kids.
  • I feel completely overwhelmed.
  • There’s never enough time or money or energy.
  • Bad attitudes are a big problem in my homeschooling—and I’m talking about me, not my kids.
  • I can’t figure out how to organize my schedule for flexibility and productivity.
  • I wish I were more consistent.

Heidi St. John

EPIC: The Fight for Faith and Family in a New Age

  • Why parenting is really a battle between good and evil
  • How to engage intentionally in your parenting with the big picture in mind

Heidi St. John has been married to her husband, Jay, since 1989. They have seven children (and a son-in-law) ranging in age from toddler to young adult and have homeschooled their children all the way through high school. A popular author and conference speaker, Heidi brings a refreshing mix of information and inspiration to listeners on the radio, in person and through the written word.

Heidi’s transparency and honesty are like a breath of fresh air in a world where too many speakers seem to have all the answers. Her ability to be real with her listeners and readers allows them to identify with her at a deep level which in turn allows Heidi to gently lead her audience toward the Savior who actually DOES have all the answers.

You’ll laugh, cry and nod your head at Heidi’s insights, her truth-telling and her delightful sense of humor as she brings hope and encouragement to your audience.

Janice Price and Donna Krahn

What You Need to Know about Teaching and Learning Methods

  • The importance of understanding your children
  • How to drive effective learning
  • Factoring in the teacher’s style

Homeschooling is a way of life for Janice Price: consulting at Rainbow Resource Center since 2003 plus 20 years of homeschooling her own three children (from kindergarten through high school graduation). She has been married to Scott for 38 years; their three children are all university graduates and their six (soon to be seven) grandchildren are now second-generation homeschoolers. As with many homeschooling moms, Janice has worn various related-to-homeschooling hats: coordinator of a new-to-homeschooling support group, consultant for Westbridge Academy (an umbrella school for home educated, gifted students), administrator of Peoria Co-operative Academy (a history-based unit study co-op and support school), and exhibit hall coordinator for her local homeschool convention. Janice has a B.A. from Phillips University and a M.Ed. from Idaho State University and before her wife, mother, and homeschooling career, she worked for almost ten years in student personnel at four different universities.

Donna Krahn has been married to Gary for 35 years; they have three children and one grandson. She has a bachelor’s degree in Christian education and a second bachelor’s degree with a concentration in early childhood education, both from Lincoln Christian University, and has spent over 30 years in education, teaching at a variety of levels and subjects from preschool to high school. Donna’s experiences have included serving as a junior and senior high youth sponsor in her church, tutoring students who needed a little extra help, organizing science fairs and workshops, and judging spelling bees and speech contests for ACSI. Donna joined the Rainbow Resource team in 2003 and now spends her time researching curriculum in order to understand it and better serve the homeschool community.

Voddie Baucham

Teaching Your Children with Your Grandchildren in Mind

  • Why some homeschool graduates are not homeschooling their children
  • The right “why” vs. the wrong “why” of homeschooling
  • How to teach our children why we homeschool

Voddie Baucham wears many hats. He is a husband, father, pastor, author, professor, conference speaker and church planter. He currently serves as Pastor of Preaching at Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, TX. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Reformed Theological Seminary in Houston, TX. He has also lectured at Southern Seminary.

Voddie makes the Bible clear and demonstrates the relevance of God’s word to everyday life. However, he does so without compromising the centrality of Christ and the gospel. Those who hear him preach find themselves both challenged and encouraged.

Voddie’s area of emphasis is Cultural Apologetics. Whether teaching on classical apologetic issues like the validity and historicity of the Bible, or the resurrection of Christ; or teaching on biblical manhood/womanhood, marriage and family, he helps ordinary people understand the significance of thinking and living biblically in every area of life.

It is impossible to understand Voddie’s approach to the Bible without first understanding the path he has walked. Raised in a non-Christian, single-parent home, Voddie did not hear the gospel until he was in college. His journey to faith was a very unusual and intellectual one. Consequently, he understands what it means to be a skeptic, and knows what it’s like to try to figure out the Christian life without relying on the traditions of men. As a result, he speaks to ‘outsiders’ in ways few Bible teachers can.

Dr. Baucham holds degrees from Houston Baptist University (BA in Christianity/BA in Sociology), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (D.Min.), an honorary degree from Southern California Seminary (D.D.), and additional post-graduate study at the University of Oxford, England (Regent’s Park College).

Voddie and his wife, Bridget have been married since 1989. They have nine children: Jasmine, Trey (Voddie, III), Elijah, Asher, Judah, Micah, Safya, Amos, and Simeon. The Bauchams are committed home educators.

On a personal note, Voddie is also an accomplished Martial Artist. He took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2012 as an avenue of self-defense training, personal fitness, and outreach. However, he began competing and found both a passion and a talent. He has won numerous tournaments and titles, including winning the 2014 Pan American Championship in his division.

They are the ministries behind Homeschool Summits. Based in Colorado, both organizations exist to help parents raise their children to love and serve God. CHEC is a state organization that fights for homeschool liberty and helps parents get started homeschooling and stay the journey. (Learn more here.) Generations is a national organization that offers a daily radio program, family events, curriculum, and more. (Learn more here.) Together, they are working to bring Homeschool Summits to your home.

Sure! If you’d like to market this event through your own online platform and receive 50% earnings, learn more here.

Short answer = nope! We ARE pulling together a fantastic lineup of speakers and even shopping options, but it won’t replace attending your local homeschool conference. We highly recommend checking with your state organization (find a list here) for more information about their conferences. As awesome as this summit will be, we still believe that the in-person networking of a local conference is invaluable!

… and we’re incredibly passionate about home education, discipleship, and the church. Both of us were homeschooled growing up, and now we have a great burden to build on all our parents taught us. We’ve been married for just over two years and just welcomed the sweetest baby in the world to our family, so we are in the throes of learning what it means to raise a family to the glory of God.

A little about us: Daniel operates an accounting firm and is also the founder of LifeLaunch, a ministry with the mission of launching the next generation through powerful mentoring relationships and real-life integration. Megan loves everything about running a home, and she’s also an integral part of the family business. And she’s loving motherhood even more than she thought she would!

As you might know, CHEC and Generations are the organizations behind Homeschool Summits, and both of us have been a part of their ministries for many years. Now, it’s such a privilege to serve with Homeschool Summits as we purpose to bring Christian families the resources and encouragement they need to homeschool with confidence and pass on the faith to their children.

We’re honored to be your hosts for the Homeschool Teaching Summit, and we can’t wait to begin!
